I have been an asst mngr for 2 yrs, with the same boss for 3 yrs. Without any pre-cursor's,my boss advised me today, that perception's of me from over 3 yrs ago are affecting my ability to keep my job. He stated that he cannot develop me witht eh "stigma" remaing form several years ago.He stated that there is nothing that has recently occured and he cannot pin point anything. It was heavily inferred that my job is at stake. I was not written up nor am I aware that anything was formally documented. He was insulting throughout his repromand. I have worked for the same company for 6 yrs and was completely caught off guard by this. Can he threaten my job in this way?
State/Country relating to Question: Minnesota Already Tried: During our meeting I asked him the source of this. What reference he could provide? I received no feedback. I have done nothing else at this point.
Where do you reside?
Minnesota
Sorry, I didn't receive the "Optional information" or "Already Tried" segments initially. Can you tell me about the "stigma" from several years ago? What, if anything, was this referring to? Are you a member of any protected class?
Several yrs ago I was in several auto accidents, within 10 mths, one of my autos was totalled. Additionaly, as a single mom, I was having an an incredibly difficult time with daycare. One daycare was shut down for an act of molestation. I naturally would have conversations with my peers, as peers do, on these matters. My boss, who hates children and has never been in a car accident, hated hearing all of us single mothers commiserating. This was a brief period of time, maybe a couple of weeks. It has not been brought up since, until today. He told me that bbecause "people view me as drama" and then referenced these speficic scenario's, he cannot develop me as a manager and that if I don't get rid of it then he can't trust me Again, I didn't have any forewarning, last month he awarded me for my dedication to my personal and comapny development.
Minnesota does offer protection from loss of employment for sexual Harassment, sexual orientation issues, race or national origin and retaliation. Unfortunatly, you haven't described anything that would seem to meet these criteria. Simply put, it would seem that the employer would have the legal ability to let you go. With that said, it would still seem that you may have some limited recourse. I say this as the situation you've described seems to be without any basis in fact. As you have not been fired at this point, you, of course, have no legal action. If you are terminated, I would locate an employment law attorney in your area immediately. First, any claim would have time limitations that need to be taken into consideration. Second, despite not fitting any of the listed criteria, it seems somehow inequitable to let you go for whatever reason might ultimately be supplied. I hope you found my answer helpful. If so, please click on the green ACCEPT for my answer. This is necessary for me to be paid for my work and so that I can get credit for assisting you. Your question will not close, and you will still have the opportunity to follow-up if needed. Leaving a bonus and positive feedback is not required, but doing so is certainly appreciated! Thank you and good luck!
