became a directbuy member a few days ago and I'm realizing it was not a wise choice how can I get out of the contract?
State/Country relating to Question: Illinois Already Tried: I have not tried to cancel because I was unable to obtain any product info until my orientation earlier today
I suggest you review the contract that you signed and pay attention to any clauses that deal with early termination. Since I do not have a copy of the contract in front of me, I cannot directly review it for you, but typically early termination and possible damages owed (if termination is done without cause) should be stated directly. Otherwise, if you have not yet fulfilled your end of the deal (for example, you did not make a payment), then send a letter stating that you no longer will perform and consider the contract void and unperformed. Sincerely, Dimitry Alexander Kaplun, Esq.
Yes , I did pay 1/3 of the membership price. I did notice later that on the back of the contract you can cancel within 3 days. There are blank spaces for the date to be filled out and signed, but all of that is blank.
When did you put in your deposit--was it more than 3 days ago?
It was Friday but I couldn't access any information until my orientation which was today because it takes several to be put in their system. Also 3 days would put me at Monday and they are closed on Monday

Then if you want out, argue that the 3 days clause meant "3 business days" or days in which the company can do business, which would make the deadline Wednesday (if they are closed on the weekend).

Call them tomorrow, explain that you only had access to see your contract yesterday, and you are exercising your cancellation. If they argue, demand the refund of your check, threaten to report them to the Better Business Bureau, and the Illinois Department of State. Typically if you make enough noise, companies are more than glad to get rid of you, since they do not want bad press or bad publicity.

Sincerely,

Dimitry Alexander Kaplun, Esq.

If that does not work, am I still liable for the remainer 2/3 of the membership. Or can I block the charges on my credit card.
Technically you may still be liable for the remainder, but you can always block the charges and if direct buy does not release you, try to put the initial charge on dispute as well, on the grounds of Fraud (if you had 3 days to cancel, but only knew about it for a day, that can constitute deceptive business practice and fraud).
