I am the custodial parent of 3 children under age 11. My ex-husband seems to think that while they are under the care of their grandparents that a letter needs to be signed directing care during emergencies. With the idea that my parents are mentating sane adults is this true?

If you are not accesible e.g. out of state then this is a good idea. If you are just dropping the kids off for a visit this is unnecessary. A grandparent cannot authorize medical treatment. This is why it good to have a temporaty guardianship document if you are going to be unavailable.
