I got a ticket for the new "Move Over Law". I had never heard of it until the officer stopped me and told me about it. I called to find out how much the ticket would be and they said $428.00. Why is this information not getting out. I have asked about 40 people about it and no one has heard of it. I'm a student and I really don't have that kind of money. Seems as if we should be informed about the importance of moving over. Can anyone help?
State/Country relating to Question: Georgia Already Tried: I have to go to court on August 26, at 8:30am. I don't have the money to pay the fine and I really don't think I was informed about this new law. Is it in the driver's manual and when I renewed my license, why didn't I hear about this new law. I don't have a problem with the law. I just think we need to be informed. $500 is a lot of money. I asked about 50 people about this and they never heard of it.
What state did this occur in?Thank you
Georgia
I see now this was in Georgia. The optional information was not initially visible. You are considered to have constructive notice of the law. There is no requirement that you be personally informed of the new law. You may have options. Contact the court and inquire if dirver safety is available to keep this infraction off of your record. Additionally, inquire if the court offer's payment plans. Thank youPlease click on the ACCEPT button for my answer so that I receive credit for assisting you. What is driver safety and what does it do for me? Payment plans are offered if you are on probation until its paid. That's not good! Anymore advice? When I go to court, they only ask if you want to plead guilty or not guilty right? What is constructive notice of the law?
In many jurisdictions for traffic offenses a defendant may take a driver's safety course in lieu of the conviction on their record. Costs and fees vary so check with the court. A payment plan with probation is not bad as long as you do not commit a new violation. I would suggest calling the court to inquire about their options. There may be a diversion program as well which would be similar to the probation you mention. With diversion programs if you succefully meet the requirement and have no additional infractions on your record you actually have no conviction. In some areas, you can enter into such programs via the mail without an actual appearance. You will need to check with the court to determine all available options. The court should be able to provide this information via the phone and may have such information on their website.Thank youPlease click on the ACCEPT button for my answer so that I receive credit for assisting you.
