i live in Oregon a non community property states if it matters. my girlfriend has our daughter under her medical. she did not pay for some hospital bills that now is over $2000. i don't know how the debt collectors got my number because i just changed it do to people prank calling, but they are telling me that it is my responsibility to pay. i had no idea about these medical bills till now. I'm scared they might garnish me and my paychecks is for rent, food, and bills. The hospital bills is from her visits and our daughters put together. Am i responsible to pay this debt?

Thank you for contacting our JA team for guidance.
You are not responsible for your girlfriend's medical bills. However, you could be held liable or all or a portion of your daughter's bills. You need to tell the collection agency that you are not married and cannot be held responsible for your g/f's medical expenses.
However, you and your g/f should make arrangement for each of you to pay 1/2 of the expenses that the insurance does not cover as this is likely what a court would order and as a parent, you can be held liable.
While they often use scare tactics to collect, if you are willing to enter into a written payment agreement, they will often leave you alone as long as you make payments as agreed.
