My father died with a couple of credit card balances and my mother survived him. The cards were in his name only. Most of the balances were written off, but there were some charges after he died (lead-generation services that posted invoices) before my mother could cancel the services. These amounts are scheduled to go to collection. Is my mother liable for these debts in Georgia? If I pay them off for her, will it appear on her credit rating?
State/Country relating to Question: Georgia Already Tried: I want to preserve my mother's credit rating because she will probably have to move into a smaller house soon.
Thank you for using JustAnswer! I am sorry to learn of your loss. When your father passed, his debts passed with him. Your mother is not liable for his credit card debts -- no matter how often the collection calls come or what they say.
