my mother in-law attends beauty school in san antonio tx. she is not a legal resident of this country and does not speak or understand english. She thinks the school is taking advantage of her because they are charging her 12% interest on her own money. the school will not give her a copy of her contract but only lets her view one page where it says she owes 12% interest, with her signature on it. She says they never told her what she was signing and they never tried to explain it to her in spanish or made an effort to translate what she was signing. Now they are telling her she can no longer attend school until she pays them. she has over 1000 hour completed out of 1500 total. she also says that she has made all of the payments on time. What can we do?
State/Country relating to Question: Texas Already Tried: nothing, she says they held her in the office for 4 hrs, trying to make her pay with a money order. She is stressed and asked me for help.
First you can demand a copy of the agreement she signed for the school. That agreement governs the relationship between the parties. It is difficult to advise further without the details of the contract, but if they required her to sign the contract knowing that she does not speak English that agreement is voidable.
she tells me that there is a state mandated test at the end of the course that requires her to have a Texas Id and since she is not legal it is possible that would pay the 9000.00 in vain what do you advise

did your mother know she had to be legal before starting her studies?

no, she did not know, and the school did not mention that. they did however have her sign an agreement that says she would need to have a valid state id. She says there are many student in the school with her same status.
there is little your mother can do since the agreement she signed indicated she needed a valid id but signed the agreement knowing she did not and could not obtain one.
