Hello, As an automotive technician it is often necessary to test drive the customer´s car. I was stopped for speeding during a test drive and when the officer asked for the car´s registration I explained that it was a customer´s car and that I did not have access to the registration. He proceeded to get heavy handed with me and made me go through the customer´s glove box even after asking him if that was correct or not. I have no clue where to start looking for laws that pertain to our peculiar circumstances as automotive technicians. Can you direct me to such laws. I am in the state of Indiana.
State/Country relating to Question: Indiana Already Tried: I read through some of the Indiana law for speeding but haven't found any specific laws regarding presenting registration and proof of insurance
You research state specific laws at www.findlaw.com and www.westlaw.com Keep in mind that the officer is not required to treat you differently or permit the law to be broken due to your status here. Otherwise, all drivers so stopped would claim to be technicians.
Looking through those two sites I don't find the answer to my question about presenting the registration to a car that is in my care and custody but is not my vehicle and therefore I do not have a registration for it. My suspicion is that there is no law that pertains to my particular circumstance at least no traffic law. Would there be a different section of law that would overrule traffic law on this matter?
I am afraid not. I am not aware of an exception to the general traffic laws here.
