hi-my sister received something from court saying that she has to appear in court for an unpaid debt. she has moved and the place where the letter was sent to was her old address-she just found out 1 day before her court date. what would happen if she doest show up in court? can she just contact the collections company to make the payment? what would be the consequences?
State/Country relating to Question: Virginia Already Tried: she hasnt done anything because she only found out about the court date this afternoon and the hearing is tomorrow @ 9am. the address where the warrant(?) was sent to was her old address and the current residents there misplaced it.
If she does not appear they can get a default judgment against her and that would include the debt plus attoreny fees. She can tell the court she did not get the notice and they can reset the hearing. She can call them and try to get a payment made so they will stop the hearing unless she wants to fight that the debt.
