I have recently had my first assisant telling everyone in the community and at my workplace that I am exposing myself to an officer in our community and has threatned to have me fired from my job because of this. I have NOT done such things. She has been warned to keep her mouth shut and to quit spreading these lies, however, I have had multiple customers come in and tell me she is still telling these things. What can I do?
State/Country relating to Question: Illinois Already Tried: I have spoken to my boss regarding the situation, but other than talk to her, nothing has been done. I am upset because this type of slander can ruin reputations, lives and jobs.
Slander requires showing false statements made to another causing harm to reputation and financially. It is an expensive and time consuming lawsuit. Consider also if the defendant has any money to collect assuming you succeed and obtain a judgment. Often a lawyer letter leads to the slander to stop and is more cost effective. If I have witnesses that would testify that this person is spreading these damaging lies would that help any?
That would help a lot since it helps establish what was said. Often plaintiffs lose because defendant denies saying what is alleged but witnesses shift the balance in your favor.
