State/Country relating to Question: Alabama
Dear blakin,
Thank you for your question and I look forward to working on your answer. Also, it is important to know that I can only respond to your post and the information contained in it, as I do not know what you know unless you describe it fully. Also, due to site tech reasons, oftentimes I am initially only able to see the first part of your post, so I apologize in advance if I ask a redundant question.
That being said, if you would like me to work on an answer for you, and in order to better assist you, could you please clarify for me:
Could you please either cut and paste what you posted before or resubmit that information? I am not finding any poste relating to a floor question.
Thanks.
I look forward to getting to work on this for you. Hang in there!
Sincerely,
S. Joy, Legal Expert

A times there can be a delay of an hour or more in between my answers because I may be helping other customers or taking a break. In addition, if it is late at night, EST, and we are between postings, I may go get some shut eye, but I'll be back the next day, so never fear. On Saturday, there will be greater gaps in time due to scheduling, for any needed follow up, but rest assured, by day's end it will be done.
I hired a contractor to install a laminate wood floor in my home. I live in Alabama. He left the job unfinished and unsatisfactory. The cost of the floor is $5500 so Small Claims is not an option. I have attempted to contact by phone and in person with no response. I have been trying to contact him for 5 months now. What are my options?
First, if he was insured, contact his carrier. If you paid with credit card, call your company to dispute. You can either still choose small claims if you are willing to accept a judgment limited to the amount of that jurisdiction OR, you can file in your superior court, which is a lot more trouble and expense (many people opt to cut their losses, but I realize that is a $2500 cut, ouch). If the result will otherwise be $0, I would still do Small Claims, but that is a personal decision.
If he was licensed in any way via the state of Alabama, contact the licensing board. You can also file a complaint with the Better Business Burea at http://www.bbb.org/
This is such a commonn problem between contractors and consumer. I wish the use of escrow to hold moneys with a 3rd party were more prevalent - it would protect both sides.
Good luck here, tough decisions, I know.
