We never married, but my girlfriend of 8 years and I are separating. We have a six year old child together, a mortgage, and approximately $10,000 in credit card debt in both our names. So far we have been able to work things out agreeably without any mediation or legal action, but I am concerned about protecting myself "just in case". My friends and family all say I need to get a lawyer. No offense, but I have to admit that the idea is a little creepy to me. What would you suggest my next move be.
Optional Information: State/Country of Question: North Carolina Already Tried: Nothing really. Just trying to work things out ourselves.
Your friends and family are right. Although "creepy" and distasteful, consider at least having a consultation with a family/divorce attorney in your area. You may be able to work things out yourself, but because you also have a child, it may be worthwhile to you to figure out what child support you reasonably need to be prepared for, and also how to properly protect certain assets (if any) that were there pre-relationship.
