So i received a alert that my credit score has gone down. I checked my credit report and it showed a lien. I made a payment to the state in Feb. for 300. The check has yet to cashed, I have called every month since then, to see why it is taking so long to cash the check and should I cancel the check and have it reissued. The response i was getting was we are backed up and don't cancel the check. Now I have a lien. Can the filing of a lien be reversed? Or what should I do now?
Hello,
What was the lien a result of? In other words, what company/agency liened you? Also, what state are you in please?
Taxes unpaid. Georgia
Hi,
Okay, thank you. And is this for state or federal taxes?
State
Hi again,
Well, the good news is that Georgia does not sell tax lien certificates. Some states will sell your house right out from under you for $300.00. However, in Georgia, tax deed sales have a right of redemption that pays 20% if the owner redeems the tax deed within one year. So you really need to get this taken care of pronto--for bigger reasons than your credit rating. Still, you asked in your original question about whether the filing can be reversed, and the answer is yes. Once the lien is paid, it will be released and will come off your credit. If this has been paid in February though and has not been cashed yet, something is wrong. I am not sure if you are close to a division office, but you could call and find out where the nearest one is and then go down there and pay your bill. I would go ahead and cancel the other check because you will have a receipt showing you paid the lien.
ok.. so if i pay the lien off on monday, the lien will be taken off my credit and not stay on for 7 years? Or will it just show paid for 7 yrs?
Well, it depends. If you can get a Certificate of Release, then you can forward this to the credit bureaus and it can be taken off. If not though, it will just showed as "paid" on your report. You may want to contact the Georgia Department of Revenue Taxpayer Advocate Madeline Mangan(NNN) NNN-NNNNwith your name, telephone number, account number and a brief description of your problem, emphasizing the quandary you are in and that you have this outstanding check just floating out there. Hopefully, she can work with you on getting the certificate of release.
