I am interested starting a non-profit organization, in Virginia it is called non-stock. one of the stipulations is you must have a registered agent and the agent can not be the corporation.

You can pick anyone you want for a registered agent. It is usually an attorney or one of the principals of the non-profit. This is the person that accepts service of any legal papers that must be given to the non-profit. This usually involves little work and is just "there" in case.
