HIPAA provides protection of your medical information. It keeps your doctors, hospitals, nurses, etc. from disclosing your health information without your permission. Once you information leaves there possession, your medical professionals can no longer protect your privacy. If one of these "covered entities" have released your information without your consent, you can file a complaint with the U.S Dept. Health and Human Services office of Civil Rights.

Individuals who are not health care providers are not covered under HIPAA laws.
