A child cannot determine where they will ive until the age of 18 or until they are emancipated. To be emancipated, the child must demonstrate that they are capable of self support which requires a court filing and a hearing. In most cases it occurs in the context of joining the military or seeking consent of the court to marry. Until that occurs, a parent can have the child returned to the parental home.
