Dr. Gardner :

Hello. I'm Dr. Gardner. I'm hoping I can help you with Barbie.

Dr. Gardner :

One common cause of weakness in goats is thiamine deficiency. If this is the case, having a vet administer a B1 injection can rapidly correct the problem.

Dr. Gardner :

It is also possible that Barbie may have eaten something she should not have. Goats are usually good at avoiding toxic plants, but even they sometimes make mistakes.

Dr. Gardner :

Has she eaten a lot of grain recently?

Customer : yes she eats ALOT of grain Been trying to cut them both back. Just sort of "moaning" and laying around.
Dr. Gardner :

She may have a grain overload. If that's the case she could have rumen acidosis.

Dr. Gardner :

The pH of the rumen can become too acidic if they eat too much grain at once.

Dr. Gardner :

Is she bloated at all?

Customer : She doesn't seem bloated
Dr. Gardner :

Ok. Any chance she could be pregnant?

Customer : Yes I believe so
Dr. Gardner :

Any idea how far along she might be?

Customer : Not really I got them right before Christmas they were about 2months old?
Dr. Gardner :

So she should be around six months old now. That's old enough to be pregnant.

Customer : Ok how long do they carry?
Dr. Gardner :

Unfortunately it sounds like Barbie needs to be examined. If she's pregnant, she could be having complications. There are metabolic problems that can come with pregnancy, like pregnancy toxemia.

Dr. Gardner :

They carry 144 - 155 days

Customer : Ok I will get in touch with my local vet
Dr. Gardner :

Hopefully she just needs a shot of B1 and all will be right with the world again.

Customer : Ok thank you very much
Dr. Gardner :

You're very welcome. Good luck to you both. Don't hesitate to contact me with any further questions.

Customer : Will do for sure. Have a great afternoon
