Hi, I'm Dr Steve. Where are the wounds located?
inside back legs by ears behind front legs and a few on stomach
Are the wounds just through the skin or are the muscles damaged too?
How large /long are the wounds
on the front leg it could be but they are more just broken the skin more of a surface wound and each wound is maybe 2 - 3 inches long
Ok how is his alertness and appetite?
he drank a full calf bottle after it happened and hes calm but jumpy and laying down
my daughter is showing him in a bucket calf show and he walked around on the halter for about 20 minutes after he drank the bottle
Ok, If the wounds are not too deep , then the main concern is infection and pain.
is there a possibility of internal issues?
We sprayed wound kote on all of the wounds after it happened
Things that should be done is treat him with injectable antibiotics to prevent infection, Injection for pain and a topical spray to help promote healing and prevent infection.
Internal issues are possible, but with the relatively minor wounds ( compared to what they could have been) it is less likely to be internal injuries. Unfortunately if there are internal injuries, it is rarely successful in treating them and animals with internal injuries usually end up not making it. From what you have described, he seems to be in pretty good shape and internal injuries, while possible , may not be very likely.
What antibiotics do you have access to and do you have any banamine?
nothing for animals until in the morning but i have amoxicillin for adults and no banamine
Are you checking on the medicines you have ?
Sorry I missed your reply thanks
Ok, is the amoxicillin an injection for cattle?
should we try to feed him some more or just let him rest and check on him. since it has has happened he has had his head in the feed bucket
no it is a pill for people nothing for animals
Dog bites will get infected. For tonight, just keep him comfortable. If he wants to eat, allow him to and give him free access to water. He will need antibiotics in an injectable form ( so they are not broken down by stomach acids) These are available from a vet or farm store. I have used penicillin, micotil and nuflor for this purpose. THis use is considered extra label use and should be done by the oreder of a vet .
The banamine is also an injection thta helps with discomfort. THe thing that I have had the best results with for wounds is a product called Vetericyn VF. This is a spray that increases oxygen to the wound, promotes healing, reduces infection and has helped heal really bad wounds. It seems to work better than blue kote, iodine and any other sprays that I have tried. Thisis sprayed on the wounds twice a day until they have healed. Tis may take 10-14 days.
If he continues to act good and still has an appetite in the morning, the liklihood of internal injuries is vey small. I hope this has helped. If it has would you please click the accept button so i may receive credit for my answer. Thank you and good luck. If you have more questions, please continue
ok thank you very much
