Sounds like its a gromit that stops the motherboard resting on the metal plate.
There are a few of these, and its more to stop it getting scratched up and a build up of static, so check the system board that its not resting on the plate (the casing) and it should be ok.

Just took the MB back out, no other grommets. I did find a post that fits what you said.
My stepdaughter has the same laptop, was tempted to use it to check, but man it's a pain in the ass to disassemble this.
