I have a HP G62 laptop with jammed battery latch. I had to replace the battery, when I took the battery out the latch worked fine. When I tried to put in the new battery it would not latch.

It looks like the latch is broken inside, so it does not hold the battery. Well, since it is broken, you have to replace it, but the latch is not sold separately and/or it comes with the whole base cover/enclosure, so you would need to get a new one:

, but it is not wroth it and it's complicated. You can just use (strong) duct tape to hold the battery; it should work fine.
