My daughter is paying rent on an apartment that she doesn't

Customer Question

Hello, my daughter is paying rent on an apartment that she doesn't live in. She took a job as a traveling nurse and will not be living there any longer. She is having to pay rent for her current residence as well. Does she have to continue to pay rent even though she is not living there.
JA: Because laws vary from place to place, can you tell me what state the property is in?
Customer: Norfolk, Virginia
JA: What are the terms of the lease? Any issues related to maintenance or upkeep?
Customer: No issues with maintenance or repairs. Only normal live in issues. I'm not aware of the details of the lease, but I know the lease is up in March.
JA: Anything else you want the lawyer to know before I connect you?
Customer: Only that my daughter stated to me that the landlord informed her that she would try to get another tenant, but thus far has not. According to the landlord, that is.

This is attorney Bill answering your landlord-tenant law question today.

To get a better idea of the fact surrounding this case I'd like to know:

What is the lease term ?

Does the lease specify anything about the right to sublease or assign the tenancy ?

How many more months are left in the lease ?
