as a landlord can i take a picture of the front yard as some damage occurred to the brick planter box? Do i need to notify tenant to take a photo of the front yard? California

Thank you for your question. Please permit me to assist you with your concerns.
Provided that you took the image from a public street, and it was visible to all pedestrians or parties, there was no reasonable expectation of privacy, and it was not behind any sort of a privacy fence, you can take images. You DO NOT need to notify the tenant if you never physically enter the property or step into the front yard. You would only need permission to enter the property or the yard and then would be free to take pictures, but taking them from the sidewalk or the street is perfectly legal and permitted.
