Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!

Assuming nothing foreign was closed iin the door and there weren't any door or striker adjustment issues leading up to this then the problem is almost surely a failed latch. What you'll need to do is ensure the linkage from the inside and outside handles is intact and moving at the latch when moving the handles. If the linkage is intact, there were no adjustment issues and nothing foreign was closed in the door then the latch is going to need to be replaced.
