2003 KIA SpectraWhile driving car began making whirring sound, which increased in volume (possibly starter did not disengage). Pulled over stopped vehicle and turned off ignition. Car would not start again. Single clicking sound when turning key. Removed alternator, had it tested and replaced it. Still not starting. Removed starter, found it to be damaged, replaced it. Still no start. Couldn't find any burned out fuses. Is there an electrical relay to check? Other ideas?
Hi,how are you? Have you verified that the engine is not seized, meaning can you turn the crank by hand?
engine is not seized.
Ok good, when you removed the starter and found it damaged, what do you mean, teeth stripped, chipped,or electrically failed?
the copper post where the large cable attaches was broken (melted) off , there were metal grindings inside the housing, the teeth were not stripped, had it tested where i bought it and they replaced it, said it had not failed electrically.
Ok,what this sounds is a failure to one of two things that would cause this issue, the torque converter seized in the transmission stopping the flywheel from turning or the flywheel cracked and stopped the torque converter from turning. Could you see any physical damage to the fly wheel when replacing the starter?
it's a 5 speed manual transmission not automatic, does that make a difference? Did not see physical damage to the flywheel . IT seems like electricity is not getting to the starter.
This leads me to the flywheel the manual does not have the torque converter,When the flywheel seizes the starter would keep trying to turn, this in turn would melt the starter due to overheating.

Is there anyway that you can have someone spin the crankshaft around while you watch the flywheel through the starter hole,I would just like to eliminate this first because I have had another spectra do almost exactly what yours has done.
