Ok,the wires need to be checked from the starter to the battery and from the alternator to the battery, what you are are looking for is any wires that are frayed or loose that would create this electrical draw on the battery.Next the ignition switch needs to be checked and tested to ensure there is no electrical draw.Electrical draws on the battery can be tough to find, but with patience it can be done.

Could the starter be bad and causing the short?

Yes the starter could also cause this issue, the starter can be checked for free at auto zone while still installed on the vehicle.
