My 2002 kia spectra makes a "whining" noise when starting and accelerating. What could be the problem?

Hi,most commonly this is due to either alternator bearing noise or belt tensioner pulley bearing noise.you will need a mechanic's stethoscope(about $20 ar parts store) in order to accurately diagnose. With engine idling and making noise, place end of stethosope on alternator and then tensioner pulley. Replace whichever the noise is amplified when listening. USE EXTREME CAUTION when doing this as your hand will be very close to the moving drive belt. If not confident of doing this, then have a shop do this for you
