My horn seems to be shorting out. It may be in the steering

Customer Question

My horn seems to be shorting out. It may be in the steering columb. I disconnected the air bag plug and it stops. Can I take the skin off of the air bag and replace the horn switch only?
JA: How long has this been an issue? How many miles are on the car?
Customer: The jeep only has 20000 miles on it.
JA: What is the model/year of your Jeep?
Customer: 1997 4 cyl wrangler
JA: Are you fixing your Wrangler yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: I work on it myself. Not familiar with horn electrical parts. had to replace turn signal switch only.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: not really

So are you saying the horn starts sounding, and if you unplug the wiring at the steering column it stops?

You can remove the airbag, and check out the contacts behind it- the whole airbag unit pushes down, and allows the contacts to touch. The springs may be weak.

If that is the case, can it be repaired without replacing the bag?
