I have a 2006 Jeep Liberty 4wd sport. When the horn is

Customer Question

I have a 2006 Jeep Liberty 4wd sport. When the horn is engaged, it just clicks. I have checked the fuse in cavity 1 of the fuse panel and it is fine (sunroof and power windows work fine). Do you where else the problem may reside? Thanks!

good evening my name is ***** ***** I will assist

do you have a voltmeter to do some checks???

it sounds like you hear the relay and the horn itself may be the failure

Roy

I have a voltage meter
Expert:  roybelding replied 7 months ago.

ok, do you know where the horn is located?? if you do, remove the connector and test for 12 volts at the horn with the steering pad depressed

attached is a wire diagram for you to view

Roy

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
I know where the horn is location and I have attempted to remove the connector to no avail. This is what I am trying to detach (see pic), does this look right?
Expert:  roybelding replied 7 months ago.

pop up the red lock and see if it pulls out

Roy

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
Ok... give me a couple minutes to try it again
Expert:  roybelding replied 7 months ago.

ok

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
Which way allows the red lock to pop?
Expert:  roybelding replied 7 months ago.

it should come up away from the connector use a small screw driver to release it

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
I have the red lock popped now I'm trying to disconnect it
Expert:  roybelding replied 7 months ago.

ok

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
Should it just pull off at this point? It's a bear to get to move
Customer: replied 7 months ago.
Got it!!
Expert:  roybelding replied 7 months ago.

look at the bottom of the connector to see if you need to pull the end aside

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
I have it disconnected
Expert:  roybelding replied 7 months ago.

ok, test for voltage at the connector with someone pushing on the horn button

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
This is my meter... which setting do I need to use?
Expert:  roybelding replied 7 months ago.

dc voltage thats the v with the straight line at the top of the v and set it to 20 volt scale

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
Just to confirm, I am putting a lead into each of the slots at the end of the connection
Expert:  roybelding replied 7 months ago.

very blurry picture put the red lead into the orange red and the black lead to a good ground or other side of the connector

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
If so, it's just flashing 0.01 then back to 0.00
Expert:  roybelding replied 7 months ago.

did you depress the horn button

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
Here is a better pick... I put the red lead into the slot, had someone press the horn, and nothing
Expert:  roybelding replied 7 months ago.

which slot??? what about the black lead???

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
I tried in both slots with the black lead on the side of the connector
Expert:  roybelding replied 7 months ago.

the black lead needs to be grounded to either the body or the other terminal.

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
Ok... no voltage. I did have someone pressing the horn.
Expert:  roybelding replied 7 months ago.

ok, can you hear the relay click when the horn button is pushed??

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
Expert:  roybelding replied 7 months ago.

ok, remove the relay and test for 2 of the pins having 12 volts

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
No voltage
Customer: replied 7 months ago.
I did verify the meter was working by checking voltage on the car battery
Customer: replied 7 months ago.
That doesn't make sense though... bc the sun roof is working with the fuse in.
Expert:  roybelding replied 7 months ago.

what fuse??? number 1 on the diagram???

Roy

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
No. 1 on the diagram which says is the horn relay, power window relay, and sunroof.
Customer: replied 7 months ago.
I was wrong... There is voltage
Expert:  roybelding replied 7 months ago.

ok, at the fuse and relay???

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
The fuse and relay have voltage and after being more robust with the lead at the horn connection, I did get voltage there as well. I suspect I'll just need a new horn, yes?
Expert:  roybelding replied 7 months ago.

ok,hang on

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
It's dark here so I can't do anymore testing
Expert:  roybelding replied 7 months ago.

doing kid duty sorry yes. you need a horn based on these results

Expert:  roybelding replied 7 months ago.

sorry, all done

anyway, with the relay activating and all voltages present, yes, you need to replace the horn

Roy

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
Thanks for your help! I think I'll hit up the auto salvage place tomorrow and see if I can find a replacement. Thanks again and have a good holiday!
