how do you find the engine number and determine if it is the original engine on a 1988 Grand Wagoneer

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!There wasn't enough data applied to the engine itself to know if it was the exact one that came in the vehicle but if the data tag is still on the front of the right valve cover you should be able to determine at least if it was manufactured in the correct year.If the tag is on the front of the right valve cover the first number is ***** model year, which should be 8. The second and third numbers will be the month the engine was built. After that will be NX, which is the code for the 5.9 engine. The last two characters are the day of the month that the engine was built.
