Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!
If the problem happens at low speeds or stops one of the most common causes would be the EGR valve hanging open. The valve contains an internal position sensor that allows the engine controller to control flow precisely. It isn't uncommon for the sensor to fail and allow the valve to hang open when the engine controller doesn't realize it, which causes it to run very rich and poorly.
Do you know what fault codes are setting?
