Customer Question

I have a 2008 Jeep Compass. I have been told the upper strut mount bearings need to be replaced. They also told me to replace the struts and shocks since since the old ones need to be removed and disassembled to replace the bearings which is about $200 in labor. They also said since the Jeep has 100k of miles, it was prudent to replace them even though they are still in good shape but are at end of life. Does this make sense?

Unfortunately, this is true. The struts/shocks shoul dbe replaced at intervals of every 50,000 miles or so. This will greatly improve ride, handling and braking. Also true that while replacing strut mounts, the strut assembly is to be disassmbled, so it's actually the best time to replace the struts (why pay labor twice?). The labor time guide calls for 2 hours to complete ONE side in the Front, so if you are getting a quote of $200/side, that's just about right. Usually it ranges anywhere from $85-$125/hour. For the rear shocks, the labro time guide calls for around 1.5 hours per side.
