Customer Question

The accumulater and the low pressure line are to hot to touch. The a/c is blowing cool air but not cold. The system was just charged by an a/c pro shop. Day 1 and 2 the air was cold.

Welcome to Just Answer Jeep my name is Mark.

Is this an automatic temp control system or is it a manual control system?

Customer replied 317 days and 23 hours ago.

it is manual

Ok thanks. It is very common on the 99-04 models for the blend doors and recirculation doors to actually break inside the heater a/c box behind the dash.

The blend door is the one that controls the temperature blend between hot and cold and if it is broken and sitting partially open/closed then you will not get the desired temperature that you are asking for.

Chrysler has released some updated parts to address this concern and based on your description it sounds like this will apply to you.

You can click HERE to download the TSB in pdf format, that was released for this issue.

this problem has nothing to do with the blend doors. The accumulater is very hot and so is the low pressure hose. Please reread the question. Thanks

Ok, so you believe this is all related to the refrigerant portion of the system by the sounds of it.

Can you tell me what the low side and high side pressures are with the compressor engaged? Also you ambient temperature would be beneficial.

Customer replied 317 days and 22 hours ago.

I can't tell you the pressures but the ambient temp is 92. I believe there is a blockage but am looking for confirmation

Yes, a blockage or restriction in the system would give you the same symptoms. Knowing what the pressures are would help to confirm this, but without knowing that, the expansion valve is going to be the most likely source of a restriction/blockage.

High-pressure, high temperature liquid refrigerant from the liquid line passes through the expansion valve orifice, converting it in to a low-pressure, low-temperature mixture of liquid and gas before it enters the evaporator coil. A temperature sensor in the expansion valve control head monitors the temperature of the refrigerant leaving the evaporator coil throught the suction line, and adjusts the orifice size at the liquid line to let the proper amoount of refrigerant into the evaporator coil to meet the vehicle cooling requirements. Controlling the refrigerant flow through the evaporator ensures that none of the refrigerant leaving the evaporator is still in a liquid state, which could damage the compressor.

The expansion valve can fail in three different positions (open, closed or restricted).

In an Open Position: this will result in a noisy compressor or no cooling. The cause can be broken spring, broken ball or excessive moisture in the A/C system. If the spring or ball are found to be defective, replace the expansion valve. If excessive moisture is found in the A/C system, recycle the refrigerant.

In a Closed Position: There will be low suction pressure and no cooling. This may be caused by a failed power dome or excessive moisture in the A/C system. If the power dome on the expansion valve is found to be defective replace the expansion valve. If excessive moisture is found recycle the refrigerant.

A Restricted Orifice: There will be low suction pressure and no cooling. This may be caused by debris in the refrigerant system. If debris is believed to be the cause, recycle the refrigerant and replace the expansion valve and the receiver/drier.

If you would like any additional information or have more questions please don’t hesitate to ask!

Thank you,

Thank you. I was relatively sure the expansion valve was the culprit but living on an island in the middle of the carribbean I always look for confirmation before ordering parts.
Thanks again
