my 2008 patriot CVT is starting to clunk and lurch quite loudly on hot days when shifting up or down in the low range, sometimes hesitates when starting from a stop in drive or after shifting out of reverse, and when shifting out of the passing gear on the highway it's started whine as the RPMs drop from 4500 to 2100. Sounds a bit like a power take-off winding down. What could be causeing this?

Welcome to Just Answer Jeep my name is Mark.Has the check engine light ever turned on while this problem is present?
No.
Ok, if the light hasn't come on to indicate a problem, then there isn't much I can add unfortunately.I will opt out and maybe anoher expert has run into this before.
Okay, thanks for trying.
Hi, and welcome to Just Answer. My name is XXXXX XXXXX X will help the best I can. I may need to ask questions to better understand your concern. How long have you owned this vehicle?
I ask because most of what you are describing is not how a CVT works. It is constantly variable and has no "gears", just an infinate amount of gear ratio that operates with two large pulleys that change diameter and a metal belt. It is normal for it to seem hesitant from a take off and the whining noise that you describe is consistant with the speed of the engine and the cvt until the drive and driven pulleys come closer together in ratio. As for the clunk noise, that could be an issue with the CV axles.
