Customer Question

Hello I have a 2004 Jeep Liberty 4X4 V6 with a trouble code of P1776G / P0700 trans control. Is this control modual internal or something on the firewall. also anyother info you may. I have been a mechanic over 30 years and air bags and trans are still my only weekness. thank you John B.

Country: United States
Make: Jeep
Year: 2004
Engine: 3.7

Already Tried:
Pulled the Trouble code (P1776g & P0700) Checked the fulid level (Full & Clean & no leaks) when check engine light appeared trans slipped a bit, then returned to normal. At this time appears to be shifting normaly no slipping, but code will not clear.

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!

P0700 just sets in the engine controller when there is a code stored in the trans controller. The one pointing to your problem is the P1776.

P1776 sets when the trans controller sees that the solenoid switch valve in the valve body is stuck in the low/reverse position. This can be caused by the valve sticking, a bad low/reverse pressure switch in the solenoid pack, wiring, or the trans controller itself (which is part of the powertrain control module).

There was a change to the software to stop this code from setting erroneously. The first thing I would do is make sure the PCM software is up to date.

If it's up to date and the code keeps setting then you either have a sticking valve, bad low/reverse pressure switch, or a wiring problem and it would need to be diagnosed from there. Most likely would be a bad pressure switch, followed by a sticking solenoid switch valve.

Where is the pressure switch, solenoid switch & powertrain control module located ?

Are they internal,or can they be replaced with a tear down.

The pressure switches are inside the solenoid pack mounted to the top of the valve body.

The solenoid switch valve is inside the valve body.

These parts are all internal to the trans but the trans isn't removed to service them.

The powertrain control module is mounted to the left inner fender.
