Do the crank shaft sprocket have to be put on at certain position. does it matter if they aren't?

What year is your XJ? Did the vehicle have any issues prior to the chain job or were they replaced as preventative maintenance? Were all the Jaguar tools used?

1998, bad tensioner ,replaced all along with chains and guides.

Did the tensioner let go and the chain jump?

did not jump timing,engine running great, but frequent tapping.

No problem with installing the sprocket to cam positioning, the question is wether reversing the sprocket unto crankshaft will affect the performance.
