Jaguar XJ8: Hi, More serious issue. There is a high pitch

This answer was rated:

Hi, More serious issue. There is a high pitch whining sound coming from the engine. It appears to be on the top, towards the rear of the engine. By turning the climate control OFF I can reduce the noise a lot. Turn on the climate control and it is worse, turn on the air conditioner it is even worse. My mechanic says it is the "pump motor" and that is a $2,400 part from Jaguar. He says this is not uncommon on cars like mine - (2000 XJ8). He is not sure if we should let it fail in the future and then replace it; or do it now. My sense is that the whining noise has gotten worse over the past several months.

Hello and welcome to justanswer.com

Is the mechanic recommending you replace the a/c compressor?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Hi Richard,

Additional investigation has led to the conclusion that the sounds I am hearing are coming from one of the fans ( I understand there are two), which maybe will fail "someday".

Therefore the recommendation is to do nothing at this point in time.

Other than this increase on "noise level" the air/heater system is perfect.

I went and got a second opinion, and got the same answer. So I am comfortable.

Thanks for your pointed question.

Regards,
