Richard: I have a 2002 Jaguar Stype 4.0. The amber engine malfunction light came on. What do you suggest before I see the dealer? The dealer is very expensive.

Nothing so far -I am waiting for your advice.
Hello and welcome to justanswer.com
When the engine light comes on the PCM has detected an emissions related failure and stores a fault code. This code will need to be read with a compatible scan tool. I recommend a trip to your local parts store like pepboys or autozone as they will usually scan for these stored codes at no charge. If you can get the four digit code this will help. It will be a P followed by four digits like for an example P0171. On your vehicle I see issues with the ignition coils as well as other engine sensors. We should first check to make sure the fuel cap is on secure and the oil level is full. Hope this helps and let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

Richard: Excellent service - the fuel cap made the light go off. I did not go to the dealer.
That's great news.
