Have 1998 Jag XJ8...gearbox fault message on...transmission fluid leaking badly from front driver side area...limped home in 1st gear...is the tranny shot, is this easily fixed, what let go? Thanks...PJ

Hello and Welcome to justanswer..The Tcm (computer) will have triggered the light because of the sudden loss of fluid - hence loss of pressure in the transmission.The transmission may be ok - it will be a case now of tracing the cause of the leak - this can be a seal / washer / burst pipe etc - Its a little hard to say exactly what from here - so it will be a case now of physically tracing the cause of the fluid loss / leak.Once thats found and repaired - refill the fluid and re try it. Usually so long as you have not overheated the transmission and therefore no knocking / grinding noises or lock ups...it should be ok once that has been done as above.
