My father is a French national and living in France. My parents separated when I was a small child. He now needs nursing home care and his second wife has just told me that the French health system are going to try to make me pay part of the bill (if not all of it). I have a mortgage and am struggling. I have no idea what financial resources my father and his second wife have. I would like to help him, but I really have no resources as the moment and am very concerned at hearing that the French believe they can force me to pay. Apparently this is French law. However, I am an Irish citizen, I do not hold dual citizenship, and I live in Ireland. I would be grateful for advice. My questions are: to what extent would any contributions of mine be voluntary? What is Irish law on this? Does French law apply to me here?
