Customer Question

an artist friend stayed in my house twenty years ago .during his stay he used my studio, paints, canvass, and brushes, to make a painting which he hung on the wall of my house , where it has stayed ever since. I have just received a letter from him asking me to forward the painting back to him . I have always considered it a gift left as a thank you for having him his girl friend and daughter to stay. At no time over the past two decades has he asked for the painting or communicated to me that he wanted it back. what is my position ?
The painting has become part of my family and house. in the past I have bought paintings from the artist and commissioned him to paint one for me for which he was always paid. at no time was this painting ever discussed as a purchase or a commission it was painted and hung in my house and left there during his stay as a house guest in 1994.
