1. Cromlechs or dolmens are classified as National Monuments under the Irish National Monuments Acts. It is a criminal offence to interfere with one under the National Monuments Act. In essence, they are defined by legislation as being national heritage items and are the property of the State and not the landowner on whose land they are. It is also an offence to take anything from the land under or around the dolmen which is heritage property. Any items recovered belong to the State. Additionally, the use of metal detectors is prohibited on a national monument site unless licensed by the State. There is also a National categorisation of all items of national heritage in Ireland.
