Can I use a photograph of an animal, that is taken at a zoo

Customer Question

Can I use a photograph of an animal, that is taken at a zoo overseas, in a book I am publishing on evolution, if I try and contact the zoo for their permission to use the photograph and they do not reply to my letter? I do not think anyone will know at which zoo the photograph was taken, so I do not think it matters, or is it against the law?

hello, I presume you did not take the photo and do not know who did?

Expert:  Alex Reese replied 1 year ago.

the photographer would be the copyright owner and you would need their permission to use it...where did you see/obtain the photo?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I know who took the photograph, from the Flickr website.
Expert:  Alex Reese replied 1 year ago.

I see. You have to be careful, there are many companies like Getty Images that own millions of images and police the web etc. for unauthorized use, so do what you can to locate the copyright owner / photographer because without permission there is a risk

I got permission to use the photograph, however, I am worried that I may need permission from the zoo.

Do I not need permission from the zoo?
Expert:  Alex Reese replied 1 year ago.

that should not be a concern unless the zoo does not allow photos for example, but otherwise no permission should be needed
