My production company is recording a piece in which one of the characters sings part of the Macarena. Am I required to get permission from the copyright holder and what type of license would I need to obtain?
Optional Information: State/Country relating to question: New York Already Tried: Researching copyright law.
I hope this message finds you well. The short answer to your question is, yes, you would be required to purchase what is commonly referred to as a limited right of use copyright license, or simply a copyright license. This gives the the ability to use this song in a limited way.
BMG is typically the entity to use is accomplishing this task and they are quite efficient at giving you exactly what you are wanting. They have an informative website that will help you along the way, including the paperwork that you will have to fill out and the payment information for the license. They should hold the ability to license The Macarena.
I hope this helps and I appreciate the opportunity to assist you.
Best wishes going forward.
