Customer Question

Intermittent knock on 04 santa fe that lasts 5 seconds.. sounds like it goes away (or gets very quiet) then comes back. Clicking and volume sequence gets faster when accellerating and then cant really hear it past 40 mph.

Sound seems to be coming from belt area. Has 140k miles on it. Just had oil changed: Stp oil filter with 4q full synthetic + 1q Synth Lucas stabilizer.

Hello, I'm Brandon - Hyundai tech.

The knocking noise you are hearing is called rod knock.

The rod bearing is damaged from the lack of oil or oil restriction somewhere in the journal. Since the bearing is damaged the rod is hitting the journal back up and down. This is why you could hear it as your go faster.

The only fix is either overhaul the engine or replaced the engine. Both option will be expensive. Please let me know if you have further questions. Please rate me positive, thank you!

It's not so much that i hear it as I go faster, if anything, it almost seems to go away once I hit a certain speed. But until I hit that speed, it gets faster. What's the journal?

Yes, the noise is a classic connecting rod knock noise.
