I own a 2008 Sonata with 124,790 miles on it. The check engine light came on the other day and the engine started to make a tapping noise. I brought the car in to my mechanic. The code was P0011, Cam position timing over advance or system performance Bank 1. Probably caused by low oil. When they changed the oil only about 1.5 qts came out. In there optinion the engine needs to be replaced. I don't understand how this could happen so quickly and if my engine oil was that low why my oil light never came on. I change the oil every 3,000 miles myself. Is there any chance Hyndai would repair this at no cost because of the failure of the oil light.

Hello, I am Scott and i will assist you with your concern.
This is one of those questions that rarely has the happy ending, those like yourself are looking for, so I will give you the facts as history has shown.
Dealers, normally shun away from covering repair's out of warrenty, unless they are for "Loyal" repeat customers. Say, for example, you went to your local dealer for ALL maintence, from your 30/60/90/ and 120,000 miles services with all the oil changes and tire rotations inbetween. In this case, a "Good Will gesture" might be applicable, as the dealer would have some type of leverage with manufacturer, even though you are over the miles in the 10/100,000 mile warranty.
The fact that you do your own service, and even if you retained all your receipts, may not hold enough weight with the dealer/warranty administrator. When i was affiliated with a dealer before the "economic" issues of today, the scenario shown above with the "Loyal" customer, happened quite often. Since then, things have gotten, tighter. The dealers, including KIA and Hyundai {basically the same people} have gotten pretty tight when it comes to "Warranty periods"
I am not telling you not to attempt a try at it, but I am preparing you for possible rejection, and some of the reasons why that you may hear.
I would not be too hard on Hyundai, as this is pretty much being done across the board... with exception to issues related to recalls, campaigns and I did have a client with a Subaru get a head replaced, due to repeated issues; however, they were loyal Subaru clients before the warranty expired. That one was the only one I had witnessed since 2009.
Like i said, never hurts to try. if you have any ducks, get them in a neat row and apply your smiley face. Oh, being a repeat Purchaser does not hurt either... loyal buyer IE: multiple Hyundai Purchases.
Experience: ASE certified technician for over a quarter of a century.
Thank you...I am a Hyundai repeat customer (12 years). Should I contact corporate or a local dealership. The Hyindai dealership I bought it from is now under new ownership.Lastly, should my oil light have come on. Thanks again for your help.
Sorry for not responding right away. I have been working late nights, and while we have it... I will take it until the summer people leave. If you oil lamp is on, and your oil level is between add and full, you could either have a bad oil sender {lamp on but no ticking} or a clogged pick up screen {Tapping in engine} In any event, a mechanical pressure gauge reading is recommended to verify the oil presser is there.
