My 2005 sonata's tach zeros out when it wants to regardless of speed. It sometimies runs rough for a few seconds on highway. Either or both cause engine light to come on. Had it scanned. Said plugs are misfiring. Mechanic said they're not and the coils are also O K. 108,000 on car.

I am still waiting for the answer.
Hi there!Do you have the specific codes?
No, I do not have the specific codes.
Ok,Normally if all the coils are good, then the issue is likely a timing issue. This will cause multiple misfires. Also, this car uses what it called an ignition fail sensor. This will stop the coils from firing if it is failing, and also affect the tach. The engine rpms will drop right off. This is where I would have the mechanic check next. Especially the timing belt with the miles you have on the car.Hope this helps!
Thank you. Left a message for my mechanic who won't be available till the weekend. I'll let you know what happens.
Ok, I should be here and you are very welcome!
I am surprised that a sensor could work only sometimes. Always had the impression they either worked or didn't. Thanks again.
This sensor can fail erratically. Some are cut and dry, but more often then not they may fail hot and not cold or vise versa.
Today is sunday and my mechanic begged off seeing me. Said to see him tomorrow. He likes your idea. I'll let you know what happens and rate your advice after that.
Sounds good and thanks for following up!
Sorry this is taking so long. Mechanic ordered the part today and said it'll be a couple of days till he can install it. I'll let you know when that happens.
No problem at all. :)
