Check smoke detectors in the area. Heatilator fireplaces that don't have a remote generally don't beep.

The fireplace not turning on via the switch is likely due to a weak thermopile (flame sensor in the pilot flame) not putting out enough voltage to overcome the resistance in the wiring to the switch. The thermopile generates all the power to operate the gas valve. As they age the voltage output drops. I'd replace the thermopile. As far as the beeping goes I've never heard of any fireplace that didn't have a remote beep. If you can provide the model number I can do some research into this.

It is the fireplace that is beeping. It would not turn on last night and then 30 minutes later there was a beeping sound for about 30 minutes. I did not turn it on this morning but the beeping resumed for 30 minutes
