Customer Question

My 86 year old mother stays by herself during the day. we stop by every afternoon and stay with her at night. we set the thermostat on 78 when we leave of a morning but she evidently gets cold during the day and we have stopped by in the afternoon and she has the thermostat up to 90 or above. Is there a thermostat that we can adjust so she cannot increase the temperature above 80?
JA: Just to clarify, do you think this is a larger HVAC problem, or something specific to the thermostat?
Customer: Thermostat. Mother can't see well and when she gets cool/cold she just holds down the "temperature increase" button.
JA: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?
Customer: yes
JA: Anything else we should know to help you best?

There are thermostats you can lock so she can't adjust the temp. Is that acceptable?

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
I would prefer that she be able to adjust with a fixed high and low

I can do some research but the only thermostats of that type would likely be analog so no overnight setback capability. Let me know if that's OK.

There are few programmables that you can program a max/min temp as well. Let me know if you have a preference. Also need to know what has for equipment, heat only? heat & AC? a heat pump?

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
No preference. Gas pack, not heat pump. Can manually be set back at night

Here's a digital with (programmed) Hi Lo set point limits. Reliable brand.

I can't spec one that you might get at a local big box store because I have no idea what they might have in stock.
