Our A/C came on when the wife switched Heat to Cool on Auto.It

Customer Question

Our A/C came on when the wife switched Heat to Cool on Auto.
It worked for 20 mins and shut off. She assumed it hit the temperature.
But since then (yesterday) the A/C wont kick on with On or Auto. I cant make it come on no matter how low the setting.
It blinks "Cool On" for a minute and does nothing. I have kicked the breakers on and off.
Changed the batteries on the thermostat. Need help...Thanks

1.Do you have a volt meter for troubleshooting?2.If you lower temp down to say 50 will outdoor come on?3.Is indoor coming on?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
No Volt meter
lowering to 50.....neither outside or in comes onThermostat indicates it is on....but says TEMPORARY on thermostat
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It is not kicking on!
Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
OK if fan ON will not make fan come on, lets try a couple of things. Can you do some hands on? If so give me model on indoor unit
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It is a Trane XB (5 yr old unit)
Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
Look on label for an actual model number so I know what we are working with, will probably start with letter t
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
We have to 2 units
Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
Lets do this. Go to air handler and open it up. Locate the R and G wires from thermostat and touch them together and see if fan comes on.If not, look for a small 3 or 5 amp auto type fuse in air handler(Maybe on control board) and see if it is blown.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
the number is *****
Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.

Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
Since this is a gas furnace, there will be a door switch. That switch will have to be held down to try the above jumping R and G terminals on board.Go ahead and see if that fuse on board is blown
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Is the board behind the small meta door with 1 screw inside? Is that where the red and Gr wires are?
Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
Board will be in blower compartment.May or may not have fuse.Jumper R and G terminals on board with door switch held in
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
ok...no fuseI have 4 large fat wires going to the bottom of the board B, Y, R , BL
The only green wire goes into a coupler with OR, 2 reds , yeellow, green white blue ....No way to touch those together
Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
Do you see the terminals on bottom of board labeled Y W R G and C? Can you upload a pic of what you have?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I can ....send it to your email?

Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
This is the R and G I am saying jump to see if blower will come on
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
ok...let me go try that
Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
Standing by.Remember door switch will have to be held in. Also tell me if this red light comes on when door button is pushed in.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
touched that r and G together while holding switch in....Nothing!
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
red light does come on when switch is pushed in
Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
.Did you touch the terminals on board? (Not just wire to wire?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
But it blinks...not solid on
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
red to green and green to red????
Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
How many blinks between pausing or is it just a steady blink.I am talking about jumping like this pic, except R and G instead of R and Was shown.http://i.imgur.com/JprQdYv.png
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
the blinks are consistent....
I will have to get some wire to jump from R to G...hang on
Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
Standing by
Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
The slow flash is normal
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
okay....blower came on!
Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
OK that is good. Now lets put panel back on and go to thermostat.Do same at thermostat terminals. Then do R and Y and see if outdoor unit comes on
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
take jumper off and put back wires andgo thermostat?
Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
Yes
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Jumped red and yellow on thermostat and nothing happened on outside unit
Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
How about R and G at thermostat?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Do I need to put thermostat cover on to work
Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
No we are bypassing it
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Nothing with Rand G
Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
Ok now, to make sure, at thermostat we are touching the wires correct?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
No....jumped as we did on handler
Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
Sorry at thermostat we need to touch wires as we are bypassing thrmostat
Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
Wires that goes to R and wire that goes to G and Y
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
k.....going back and starting over. Red and yellow wires touch, right.? Then try RandG?
Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
Correct
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Nothing for either combo
Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
1.Do you have a meter to check voltage?2.R and G made fan come on at board, but R and G does not with thermostat wires?3.All wires still connected at furnace board and door panel in place?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
No to question 1
Yes to 2 and 3
Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
OK if jumping R and G at board made fan come on, but did not when jumping wires at thermostat we have to have a break in thermostat wire somewhere between furnace and thermostat as that is technically doing same thing. Look and see if maybe there is a float switch in drain that breaks the red wire between furnace and thermostat.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
There is a float switch attached to the drain pan. all wires seem to be secure
Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
Try bypassing it by disconnecting float switch and connecting thermostat wires without float switch in circuit
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
unplugging the unit should do that right
Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
No you will need to disconnect the wire nuts on the wires to float switch and take it out of circuit. Then connect the two wires straight to each other leaving float switch out of the circuit
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
okay.....by passed float switch and crossed r and y....then r and G.....still nothing
Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
OK we have to have a break in circuit somewhere.I am about to leave for the night.Would you like me to open to other experts to see if anyone has ideas?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
sure....thanks for your help
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
when will i knoiw they are on?
Expert:  airheatman replied 1 year ago.
No problem and wish you the best with this. All experts available will see question immediately. If any have other ideas we have not covered, they should reply soon. Thanks again for letting me work with you.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

Hi my name is ***** ***** I will do my best to help you with your issue.NOTE: I can only get paid for assisting you if you click FINISHED and RATE ANSWER after you are satisfied with answer. Are you ready?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
2 minutes
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Ok Luke.....Are you caught up with all that Airheatman and I accomplished?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Ready Luke?
Expert:  Gaztech replied 1 year ago.
After reading the conversation it looks like you are very close to solving the issue.Details are very important at this stage,You said "okay.....by passed float switch and crossed r and y....then r and G.....still nothing"NOW.. the 2 wires going to the float switch should be joined together, not the 2 wires on the float switch. Then instal door panel on furnace and try starting system from t-stat calling for cooling without any other wires bypassed.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I attached the 2 wires that each float wire was attache to.. Is that correct?
Expert:  Gaztech replied 1 year ago.
Thats right, is that what you did last night?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
yes and then I went back and touched the Gr and Red on the thermostat and nothing happened
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Thats where we left off
Expert:  Gaztech replied 1 year ago.
OK so now what do you get?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
??????
Expert:  Gaztech replied 1 year ago.
You know we could be very effective if continue by phone, what do you say?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Cant afford......if we are that close...lets go!
Expert:  Gaztech replied 1 year ago.
OK, Fallow wire from float switch to furnace control board, and take clear picture of bottom compartment of furnace. attatch picture using the paper clip logo above conversation box
Expert:  Gaztech replied 1 year ago.
Also a picture of the float switch area also
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
no paper clip ...need to upload at tinypic.com
Expert:  Gaztech replied 1 year ago.
It might say attach file
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
No...went thru this last night. Do you know the tinypic.com that thetechnician sent me last night?
Expert:  Gaztech replied 1 year ago.
No, but cant understand why you cant find the attach files on the page when everyone else get's it??
Expert:  Gaztech replied 1 year ago.
Are you using PC or phone?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
ipad
Expert:  Gaztech replied 1 year ago.
Ok, well the only other option I can offer you is PHONE, if you consider how much a service call is going to cost you, it might be the best choice
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
You arent offering the option the other technician did? I am sure you have an email I could send the pics to
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
How about that option?
Expert:  Gaztech replied 1 year ago.
***@******.***
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

Expert:  Gaztech replied 1 year ago.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Pilot light is not necessary for A/C....correct. Because, It is not lit
Expert:  Gaztech replied 1 year ago.
Thats fineOk look at board, the t-stat wire red that is maretted to the white, take that red and connect it to the R terminal on board
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
done....what about the white that is loose?
Expert:  Gaztech replied 1 year ago.
Leave it for now, it's for the float switch that we unpluged for now,OK now try system
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Cool On is blinking on thermostat and NO units are running outside or at the Handler
Expert:  Gaztech replied 1 year ago.
Blinking mean 5 min delay before it starts system because power was interrupted, just wait for it
Expert:  Gaztech replied 1 year ago.
hey meanwhile try fan on at t-stat and did you put bottom panel on furnace
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
No longer blinking...solid cool on.Nothing running!
Yes I have the bootom cover on for activation switch.
What do you mean try fanon with T stat?
Expert:  Gaztech replied 1 year ago.
There is fan mode on your t-stat, put it to on, I have to leave soon
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
put itto fan and turned system off
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
nothing
Expert:  Gaztech replied 1 year ago.
At t-stat do you have a jumper between RC and R?And all wires properly connectedRed-R with jumper to RC
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
jumper in and nothing
Expert:  Gaztech replied 1 year ago.
You handicap with this whole issue is you don't have a volt meter to do a proper test of your system wont accept Phone option, and ,unfortunately I am also opting out...
Expert:  Gaztech replied 1 year ago.
Going back to what was said before, there is a break in the wires between t-stat and furnace
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
We spoke last night until 2AM and you had to leave. I am very frustrated at this point. Where do we go from here?
Expert:  Gaztech replied 1 year ago.
Last night discussion was with a different tech. I am not supposed to opt back in after I opt out but here is one more suggestion cause I notice no other tech has taken your question.I see in the picture you sent me that you have unused wires from the t-stat to the furnace that are unused, swap the red and green and yellow with another unused wire from t-stat to furnace.Try that, I will be back later..
Expert:  Gaztech replied 1 year ago.
OK
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I think the work you did was very good. Take no offense. I appreciate your support
Consider me satisfied, and close us out
