It just means that the timer setting on the thermostat is reminding you to change the filter. It's only a reminder and has no impact on the function of your system.

How do I change the filter

What do you have for heating equipment? brand and model please

I have a Honeywell RTH230B

That's the thermostat. The filter reminder is for a furnace or air handler filter. So if you have forced air heat I need to know what you have for heating equipment because the filter goes in the furnace or air handler. If you have radiators or baseboard type heat you don't have a filter to change.
